In the year 1846, women were dying of a fever called puerperal fever aka childbed fever, 48 hours after delivering their babies. The root cause analysis of this was done by the pathologist Jacalyn Duffin and Hungarian doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis. They found that the doctors who delivered the babies didn’t wash their hands before the operation! This meant, the germs and particles from autopsies they conducted prior to the deliveries, remained on their hands and infected the women during the deliveries.
